Skills and Abilities:

  • Plumber qualified to C&G 6035 (Plumbing), C&G 6189 (Plumbing and heating) and NVQ level 3 in Plumbing or equivalent. 
  • Five years’ experience as a plumber or equivalent 
  • Must be familiar with and able to work to Water Supply Regulation and Control of Legionella L8 requirements. 
  • Experience working on commercial or industrial heating and water or building services systems 
  • Qualified mechanical engineer with experience working on commercial or industrial mechanical or heating systems is desirable 
  • Ability to influence people who are not part of your team 
  • IT skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Word  
  • Experience of supervising staff and third parties essential

Knowledge:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Trades Supervisor, on behalf of our client Government Facility Services Limited, to be based onsite at HMP Pentonville in North London. The environment can be a challenging but rewarding one.

As Supervisor you will be responsible for recruiting and supervising prisoners to work in a number of disciplines within the trade services.

You will be responsible for driving the CRED (Clean Rehabilitative Enabling and Decent) programme which provides prisoners with meaningful work experience and confidence while providing a value-for-money and a collaborative approach to improving decency in prisons.

The role requires the post holder to carefully plan the overall programme as well as managing day to day operations on the programme.

Key Duties will include but won’t be limited to:

  • To support sites in identifying how prisoner working could best support operational output and decency within the establishment.
  • Responsible for implementing any agreed prisoner working at site level, supported by Site Manager.
  • Manage the process of recruiting prisoners proactively from start to finish by liaising with establishment contacts and ensuring suitably skilled and risk assessed prisoners are selected for programmes.
  • Allocate and oversee tasks for prisoners, providing them with a full understanding of tasks and how they fit into the bigger picture of the refurbishment/site running.
  • Training and supporting prisoners to achieve the best standards possible.
  • Adhere to and promote Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Responsible for all materials and tools required on the programme.
  • To effectively track work, for example with spreadsheets or CAFM system depending on work type.
  • To liaise with the Justice Solutions Lead on progress, sharing success stories, learned techniques and request support if needed.
  • Seek best practice in prisoner working from other sites and colleagues as well as sharing learned knowledge.
  • Working with other departments to help support rehabilitation and future employment opportunities of prisoners working on the programmes.
  • Feeding into prisoners’ individual learning plans to monitor and support progress of skills and employability.

 

Person specification:

  • Trade or building qualification of some description such as carpentry or painting and decorating
  • An excellent communicator
  • Ability to engage and empower prisoners

  • Experience in managing small scale refurbishments and projects
  • Understanding of how to use tools and equipment to complete small scale refurbishments

Purpose of the role:

  • Responsible for the service delivery of the operative team
  • Assist with the recruitment and supervision of staff
  • Produce rotas for the operative team
  • Proactive reporting of all Health and Safety issues
  • Manage the issue and upkeep of PPE to the team
  • Ensure that the operative team are dressed appropriately at all times

Duties will include but won’t be limited to:

  • To be responsible for ensuring all mechanical and other systems as required by the site manager, are maintained in alignment with the service specification, industry best practice and regulatory requirements including business led compliance activities.
  • To take accountability for the supervision of all staff within their area of responsibility and other site staff as required providing direction on the work for the day and that relevant work area is maintained to a high standard. 
  • To be responsible for managing and supervising subcontractors as required by the business.  
  • Ensure all activities are effectively prioritised in-line with local procedures ensuring workload/regime is delivered escalating issues to the Site Manager when required 
  • Undertake staff appraisals providing relevant performance information to Line Managers 
  • To take accountability for the effective management of the tool inventory and maintain security standards within the work area 
  • To take accountability for ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and company policy including undertaking the role of Fire Warden and/or First Aider as required 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Plumber qualified to C&G 6035 (Plumbing), C&G 6189 (Plumbing and heating) and NVQ level 3 in Plumbing or equivalent. 
  • Five years’ experience as a plumber or equivalent 
  • Must be familiar with and able to work to Water Supply Regulation and Control of Legionella L8 requirements. 
  • Experience working on commercial or industrial heating and water or building services systems 
  • Qualified mechanical engineer with experience working on commercial or industrial mechanical or heating systems is desirable 
  • Ability to influence people who are not part of your team 
  • IT skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Word  
  • Experience of supervising staff and third parties essential

Knowledge:

  • Very good working knowledge of relevant health and safety requirements 
  • Knowledge of routine preventive maintenance 
  • Relevant professional qualifications (facilities management/project management 
  • Up to date First Aid at Work Qualification 
  • Full driving license preferably with D1 Essential Experience 

Due to the nature of the environment you will be asked to complete the standard Security Vetting for the establishments. This will include a criminal records check (standard DBS) along with either Enhanced Level 1, Enhanced Level 2 or Counter Terrorism depending on the appointed establishments.
